Vigil and rally for Savita Halappavanar

After the huge turnout last night for the Savita Halappavanar protest, FeministEvents is organising another rally on Saturday, to remember Savita and show support her family. We also want to demonstrate the depth of support for a change to Irish law and all laws which restrict a woman's right to choose. The protest is again in solidarity with the Irish Pro-Choice Campaign and the women of Ireland who are denied their human rights to decide their own fates and end their pregnancies of their own free choosing. We must support abortion rights in Ireland, and protesting in London will help support movements across Ireland and help to raise money for vital organisations like Abortion Support Network, which helps to fund Irish women travelling to the UK for abortions.

Time: 4pm
Date: Saturday 17th November
Location: Outside the Irish Embassy

Would you like to be involved in the protest? Would you like to speak briefly about how Savita’s case has affected you? Can you tell us what we can do to help change the law in Ireland? We are particularly keen to hear from Irish women who can tell us what it's like to be a woman living under such restrictive anti-choice laws. If you would like to be involved, please email feministlondon@gmail.com - anyone is welcome to speak up on the day as well, even if you've never spoken at a protest before, feel free to join us!

More information and links to follow, but please, send the message out: this is a vigil for Savita, so please come along to remember a young women, killed by anti-abortion law. We can and must work to prevent this from happening again.

Protest at the Irish Embassy

Hello,

In light of the death of Savita Halappanavar, there is a protest outside the Dail tonight by an Irish pro-choice group. In solidarity with the group, and to express our own shock and anger at the death of Savita Halappanavar, there will be a London-based pro-choice protest tonight. This will be at 6pm, at 17 Grosvenor Place, SW1X 7HR. Although it is short-notice, I hope that many of you can make it to express your own views on the terrible tragedy of a young women dying after her request for an abortion was refused.

For more information on Savita's death, please see: http://www.independent.ie/national-news/pregnant-woman-died-after-hospital-denied-abortion-3293842.html

If you have any further comments, please leave a comment below or tweet me, and if you have any pro-choice placards or banners, please bring them tonight!

UPDATE: good to see so many people interested in coming down tonight. Would really appreciate it if anyone with any banners, placards or flyers could get in touch ASAP, as there won't be time to make any before this evening. If you want to bring along candles or glowsticks or similar, go ahead!

UPDATE: Anne, from the wonderful Abortion Support Network, will be on hand to talk about the legal situation in Ireland and how to help. Visit http://www.abortionsupport.org.uk/ for more information.
Best wishes,

@FeministLondon

Weekly Update - 12th Nov onwards!

Hello and welcome to the first weekly blog for Feminist Events!

Each week I will post any events that I've found around the web for feminists in London. Hopefully it'll be a fun and diverse mix. Very generally, the aim is make it easy for people to find grassroots groups and events to attend, whether you're a newbie or seasoned professional, so please, send me anything that you like, from academic debate to zombie feminist theatre.

(I made that last one up, but if anyone is running a zombie feminist theatre, THAT WOULD BE AMAZING.)

Joking aside, the blog/twitter feed isn't going to be recommending anything in particular, but instead act as an aggregator - all events are created equal over here. Instead, they'll be listed in date/time order. More information can be found at the links under the event listing.
